— Mo Ran, Chapter 300 | ||
Mo Ran (墨燃, Mò Rán) is a disciple and a young master of Sisheng Peak under Chu Wanning's tutelage.
In his past life, he was the first emperor of the cultivation world – Taxian-jun. Mo Ran committed suicide at the age of 32 after losing all motivation to live but to his surprise, he woke up in his 16-year-old body in the first year when he became a disciple of Sisheng Peak.
Appearance[]
| [...] he was good looking. The curve of his nose gentle and soft, his lips thin and dewy, his appearance naturally radiating notes of kindness and sweetness. Just by looking at his face, anyone would think he was a lovable, good person.[1] |
Mo Ran is described as very attractive in a youthful and innocuous way. He has dimples on his cheeks, sparkling eyes, and naturally upturned lip corners making it appear as if he is always smiling. His eyes are black to the point of holding hints of a sinister purple glow which is more apparent when he is in his Taxian-jun personality.[1]
As Taxian-jun, he is described as handsome but unnaturally pale with a manic look in his eyes that glow purple. He was always dressed in black robes with golden threads and a "Mian", a hat worn by ancient Chinese emperors.
After Rebirth, the 22 year-old Mo Ran is described to be 3 cm taller (189 cm vs 186 cm) than in his first life. The difference is due to being more physically active in this lifetime during his teenage years instead of locking himself up in a room. Other differences in appearance are that post-Rebirth Mo Ran is tanned and more muscular, though still lean, from regular outdoor labor.
Personality[]
Childhood[]
He was a kind child who wanted to repay others' kindness and let go of slights. He often did not have high opinions of himself due to his early childhood. When he first formally acknowledged Chu Wanning as his Shizun, his wish was to have a holy weapon like Tianwen, so that he could save more lives. He described his first impression of Chu Wanning as "glowing" as while he did not have high opinions of himself it was quite the opposite for when it came to first impressions.
| I'm not ambitious. I only hope to learn some skills so that I can save more people. Although I am stupid, I will study hard. As long as I try my best, Shizun won't blame me for being stupid, Haha.[2] |
Past Lifetime[]
As Taxian-jun, he was tyrannical, cruel, violent, and merciless. However, he wasn't too bright and was rather uneducated as he rarely listened to Chu Wanning's lectures and lessons.[1] The emperor was prone to anger and showing signs of madness as time passed.
He would reward and punish in extremes. When someone has been kind to him, he was endlessly loyal, such as him carrying his deep feelings for Shi Mei well into his second life. Conversely, he was sadistic and cruel to those whom he felt had wronged him.
Taxian-jun also had low emotional intelligence and lacked general insights into his own emotions, he often behaved in ways that were contrary to his words and acted ambivalently towards Chu Wanning whom he has always had complicated feelings for.
His personality during this period is commonly described as Mo Ran 0.5.
Current Lifetime[]
Immediately after his rebirth, he was relatively more forgiving. He decided to avoid making the same mistakes he did in the past lifetime.[3] He still had a thick face (no shame) and was arrogant. He loathed righteous people who rush to always help others with the smallest problems.[4] He was confident, mischievous and cheeky.[5] He was sweet to the people he cherishes and likes to act spoiled in front of them.[6]
During this time, Mo Ran began to feel regrets over his harsh actions towards Chu Wanning and didn't like to recall the times when he mistreated Chu Wanning in their past life, as he found himself increasingly bewildered over the irrationality and brutality of his past behaviors. In the previous timeline, he did not pay attention during classes and was rather uneducated so after being reborn, he decided to get some basic knowledge by listening Chu Wanning's teachings.[7]
He still had many of his negative qualities and instincts from his time as Taxian-jun, but he would temper his actions mostly out of necessity. At this time, his strength had not been fully developed as yet, and he was not as powerful as when he was at the time of his death.
His personality during this period is commonly described as Mo Ran 1.0.
Some time after, due to the changes in events that happened in this lifetime, he realized that there was another side to the major events in his previous life that he did not know about. Filled with regrets over his previous cruel actions, he worked hard to be a better person.
He became kind, generous and caring. He is also humble, but to the point of being self-deprecating. However, he remains overwhelmed with guilt for his past deeds and finds it very hard to forgive himself for what he did to Chu Wanning when he was Taxian-jun.[8] He deeply admires his Shizun, and even unconsciously emulated him in way of dressing and conduct, eventually earning the title Mo Zongshi ("Grandmaster Mo") for his altruistic deeds and high capability. He also became patient, understanding, and highly adept at coaxing and spoiling Chu Wanning.
His final personality is described as Mo Ran 2.0.
